SEMI Foundation and Michigan Economic Development Corporation Announce “CHIPS in Michigan,” a Forum focused on the expansion of workforce development in microelectronics in Michigan and the impact of the CHIPS Act.

Ann Arbor, Michigan – April  10, 2023 – The SEMI Foundation, Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) are working together to make Michigan a top state for semiconductor talent solutions and growth. As part of that work, the SEMI Foundation is hosting the “CHIPS in Michigan” forum, an event focused on the expansion of microelectronics workforce development in the state and the potential impact of the CHIPS Act. The forum will be held on Tuesday, April 25th from 9am-10:30 at KLA’s Second Headquarters in Ann Arbor, Michigan, at 1200 Woodridge Avenue.

At the forum, attendees will learn about the SEMI Career and Apprenticeship Network (SCAN), through which the SEMI Foundation is building customized trainings for microelectronics employers. These programs range from quick start training to full apprenticeships – based on what employers need. The forum also features an expert panel which will explore the workforce development aspects of the CHIPS Act, a critical piece of legislation with the potential to drive significant growth and innovation in the semiconductor industry in Michigan. The event is designed for microelectronics employers, training providers, educators, workforce development organizations, and industry leaders to learn how to participate in and benefit from both SCAN and potential funding from the CHIPS Act.

“Michigan is a state with significant economic opportunities and a diverse and abundant workforce,” said Shari Liss, Executive Director of the SEMI Foundation. “The SEMI Foundation is committed to building trainings and creating pathways that connect this workforce to the many microelectronics employers who are contributing to the economic vitality of the state.”

“We are excited to host the CHIPS In Michigan forum at KLA,” said John McLaughlin, KLA’s Ann Arbor Site Lead and Global ESG Leader. “Ann Arbor is home to diverse, industry-leading talent with a natural curiosity to learn and grow, and the drive to make a big impact.”

SCAN in Michigan is a partnership between the SEMI Foundation, the MEDC, educational institutions, workforce development agencies, and community-based organizations. This program, which is currently being launched in both Michigan and the Bay Area of California, is designed to address the myriad and specific workforce needs of the microelectronics industry, to raise awareness of the many career options within, and to create economic opportunity and mobility for workers.
