RESOURCES & INITIATIVES

Semiconductors and chips are at the heart of nearly every technology we use today, from smartphones and laptops to cars and advanced medical devices. It is rare nowadays to go anywhere without touching a semiconductor.

The recently passed CHIPS and Science Act will boost domestic semiconductor manufacturing and add hundreds of thousands of American jobs in this foundational industry.

As part of the SEMI Foundation‘s workforce development portfolio, we have created free industry-aligned K-12 resources available for educators across the country.

K-12 Semiconductor Resource Repository

SEMI Foundation’s teacher-created semiconductor K-12 curriculum and content was made in partnership with Ignited Education. The repository contains single lesson plans, mini units, and more resources aligned with Next Generation Science Standards.

In addition to SEMI Foundation material, we urge educators to explore the following resources:

SEMI High Tech U

SEMI High Tech U provides teachers with STEM kits (Micro:bit or CircuitScribe) that allow students to explore semiconductors. The kits are accompanied with industry-relevant curriculum and plans, including an “Intro to Semiconductors” deck explaining the various industry sectors. Contact us if you’re interested in participating in High Tech U! Access the lesson plans for your kits at this link.

SEMI Career Exploration Site

The semiconductor industry offers a wide range of career paths, catering to various interests, skills, and education backgrounds. The Career Exploration Portal takes a student or job seeker through stages of career exploration, industry and role research, and includes a job match tool that allows visitors to take a skills and interest assessment, add in experience, and gain insight and recommendations on viable career paths for them to explore.

CHIP IN DOCUMENTARY

Roadtrip Nation’s “Chip In” PBS documentary was made possible by the SEMI Foundation. Follow along as three young adults travel through the nation in a giant green RV to explore how microelectronics shape our lives. Along the way, they meet inspiring people and discover how they can chart their own careers. The trailer itself is a great introduction for students, while the documentary provides insights on what life is like for professionals in semiconductors. The SEMI Foundation also runs “Chip In Documentary Dialogues”, interactive screening events with students and professionals that include panels with industry experts, interactive discussions, games, and curriculum.  We also offer a viewer’s guide for educators with guided questions for students. Get more information here.

SEMI Stories

Interested in sharing with your students what a career in the industry might look like? The SEMI Foundation partners with Tiggbee to create engaging videos featuring semiconductor professionals from all walks of life, in all kinds of careers. Tiggbee contracts with school districts to show these videos to entire grade levels, who then spend a week discussing the content and engaging with the professionals through the Tiggbee platform. These videos can also be used within events, training courses, programs, or classrooms to illuminate specific roles or feature nearby companies. Watch them here or view this flyer for more information.
